Medicare Rule Will Create New Challenges for Chronic Pain Patients

Jacob Sullum recently wrote an article, “Medicare Rule Will Create New Challenges for Chronic Pain Patients,” for Practical Pain Management about the ways in which the pending Medicare changes will adversely affect chronic pain patients. As he explains, the new Medicare rule is intended to address the overprescribing and overuse of opioids. However, as Sullum points out, physicians groups and patients are worried about to discourage prescriptions at or above 90 MME will put those who need higher doses of opioids at risk.

‘Inappropriate Use’ of the CDC Guideline Should Stop

In addition, Pat Anson reported in Pain News Network that the AMA said ” ‘Inappropriate Use’ of the CDC Guideline Should Stop.” Absolutely. The CDC Opioid Prescribing Guideline was never meant to be mandatory, and it is causing patients unnecessary harm. It is good to see that the AMA is, as Anson says, “finally taking a stand.”
